The Ford Puma provides impressive fuel economy and noticeably lower CO2 emissions figures, the new cleaner hybrid electric vehicle, is a combination of Fords world famous EcoBoost petrol engine and a 48-volt lithium ion battery powered electric motor. This electrification means that the mild hybrid engine captures energy usually lost under braking, adding 37lb ft of pulling power, making pulling of, overtaking and pulling away easier, all while improving fuel economy by 9%. As the engine is a mild-hybrid, this means that it doesn't drive in pure electric but makes the most of previously lost energy.
The Ford Puma will be available with a choice of three engines;
1.0L Ford EcoBoost Hybrid (mHEV) with 125PS - Manual and Automatic
1.0L Ford EcoBoost Hybrid (mHEV) with 155PS - Manual and Automatic
1.5L Ford EcoBoost with 200PS - Manual ST only

A Mild Hybrid Vehicle, a vehicle that is powered by both a normal combustion engine and a small electrical motor that helps improve efficiency. The electric motor is merely there to assist the combustion engine, not power the entire vehicle and therefore cannot drive on electric energy alone. The MHEV electric motors can be recharged in one of two ways: through regenerative braking or through the conventional engine.
You do not need to charge a MHEV, the 48V Li-ion battery is automatically recharged by regenerative braking during coasting and braking. There is no requirement to connect the battery to a power source.
As with MHEV, HEV have an internal combustion engine, but they also have a larger battery and more powerful motor. This provides more assistance to the engine and enables the vehicle to drive parts of short journeys at low speeds using the electric motor alone. Thanks to the conventional engine, this can help improve driving range. This is because the vehicle is capable of using both battery and the internal combustion engine.
